Super Museum Sunday is held each February in Savannah. It always falls on the same day as the Super Bowl. The event provides an opportunity to visit a few dozen local museums free of charge!
I go every year, so I want to pass along some of my top tips to help with your planning.

*You can tour Bonaventure on your own anytime during the day, but if you want to take the free guided tour, it begins at 2 p.m. Tours generally start at the Colonial Monument Garden (follow the blue signs.)
**The Ossabaw Island tour departs from the Rodney Hall Boat Ramp, which is located at 25 Diamond Causeway. You’ll take a pontoon to the island and back. Expect the tour to take most of the day. Here’s an award-winning photo essay I created about Ossabaw Island.
***Wormsloe’s Colonial Faire and Muster living history event takes place on Super Museum Sunday, and it’s their most popular event of the year. You can read more about Wormsloe here: Is Wormsloe Historic Site Worth Visiting?
Best Museums to Visit for African American History
If you’re interested in learning more about Black history in Savannah, consider adding these Super Museum Sunday options to your itinerary:
- Beach Institute
- Davenport House Museum
- First Bryan Baptist Church
- The King-Tisdell Cottage
- Massie Heritage Center
- Mother Mathilda Beasley Cottage
- Ossabaw Island
- Pin Point Heritage Site
- Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum
- Savannah African Art Museum
You obviously won’t be able to fit all of those in during one day, so the ones I recommend most are Beach Institute, King-Tisdell Cottage, First Bryan Baptist Church, and Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum.
Pin Point Heritage Site is an incredible museum, but it’s on the outskirts of town so it will take up a good chunk of your afternoon if you decide to go. Definitely try to fit it in if you’re able, though!
Ossabaw Island is pretty much a day trip, so if you opt for that tour, you won’t be able to do much else.
Which brings me to my next category…
Museums on the Outskirts of Savannah
If you want to make the most of your time and try to fit in as many museums on the outskirts of the city as possible, these options are located east or southeast of downtown:
- Bonaventure Historical Society
- Old Fort Jackson
- Pin Point Heritage Site
- UGA Marine Science Center
- Wormsloe Historic Site
Bonaventure Cemetery and Pin Point Heritage Site are both “musts,” in my opinion.
Museums on Tybee Island
The following museums would be ideal to group together if you’re staying on Tybee Island or planning to drive to the island for the day.
- Fort Pulaski National Monument
- Tybee Island Light Station and Museum
- Tybee Island Marine Science Center
They’re each open for a good chunk of the day, so you could fit them all in and have some time left over to check out the sights on Tybee Island.
Historic Home Tours
If you enjoy touring historic homes, there are plenty on the list. In fact, there are too many to visit in one day — unless you really rush through them!
Here are the options:
- Andrew Low House Museum
- Davenport House Museum
- Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home
- Green-Meldrim House
- Harper-Fowlkes House
- Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace
- King-Tisdell Cottage
- Mother Mathilda Beasley Cottage
The first five options are the most impressive homes on the list, in my opinion. Green-Meldrim is probably the fanciest option.
I really enjoy the simplicity and history behind King-Tisdell Cottage, though.
I’m rather surprised to see Mother Mathilda Beasley Cottage is included, since I thought it had closed in recent years.
Museums to Visit With Kids
If you’ll have kids tagging along for Super Museum Sunday, this is where I recommend taking them:
- Georgia State Railroad Museum
- Gray’s Reef Ocean Discovery Center
- Oatland Island Wildlife Center
- Savannah Children’s Museum
Oatland Island is further away than the other three and takes longer to explore, so that’s just something to keep in mind if it’s on your list.
