Crime Headlines in Savannah in 2025

Here’s a summary of some of the top crime headlines for the year:

  • In January of 2025, at least four Savannah schools were placed under lockdown due to two off-campus shooting reports in the vicinity of the schools. [source]
  • Also in January of 2025, a man serving life in prison had three of his convictions overturned by the Georgia Supreme Court. Jerry Chambers was convicted on three counts of felony murder in 2020 and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. His convictions were overturned based on a technicality. The State failed to prove that officers pursuing Chambers were “badged and uniformed.” [source]
  • In February, two SPD vehicles crashed into one another at the intersection of W 37th and Montgomery while responding to a commercial burglary call. The officers were not seriously injured but were transported to the hospital to be checked out. [source]
  • Also in February, two Chatham County Sheriff’s Office vehicles crashed into one another near Grayson Stadium while chasing a suspicious vehicle. [source]
  • One adult male died in mid-March when SPD officers were pursuing a suspect vehicle through a residential area and the suspect’s car collided with the vehicle of an innocent driver. [source]
  • Thirty gang members and associates were arrested in May of 2025 and indicted on various charges of racketeering (RICO) conspiracy, murder in aid of racketeering, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud, as well as related drug and firearms trafficking charges. All 30 defendants are alleged Sex Money Murder (SMM) gang members and associates who reportedly profited from trafficking large amounts of meth, cocaine, and heroin throughout the Savannah metro area. SMM is a subset of the East Coast faction of the Bloods. [source][source]
  • Summer in Savannah began the same way in 2025 as it did in 2024: with a mass shooting near City Market. Four people were injured when two groups fired at one another across W Congress Street. The shooting occurred nearly a year to the date when a mass shooting injured 11 people in City Market in 2024. [source][source][source]
  • In early June, a tourist was assaulted in downtown Savannah while walking back to her Airbnb rental with another female friend. The suspect attacked from behind, pulling one woman to the ground and dragging her by her hair, while the second woman attempted to fight him off. SPD listed it as an attempted kidnapping. The woman was transported to the hospital for treatment. The attack occurred near E Duffy and Price Street. [source]
  • Three people were injured in a shooting inside Oglethorpe Mall in early July. Four additional people suffered medical emergencies — including one cardiac arrest that left an individual in critical condition. City officials first claimed the shooting occurred between “two groups of people” but then backtracked after public outcry against City leaders’ refusal to acknowledge gang problems in Savannah. [source][source]
  • At least five juveniles died due to gun violence in Savannah. The shootings occurred on February 21, June 10, August 21, August 22, and September 18.
  • In early December of 2025, Savannah made headlines for an acid attack near Forsyth Park. A woman was walking home from church when someone approached her from behind and poured acid over her head. The victim required numerous skin graft surgeries. Since the incident was high profile, SPD stepped up their presence around the park and was more forthcoming than usual about providing updates regarding the attack. [source][source][source]
