In the meantime, here are the end-of-year statistics based on the weekly reports SPD released throughout 2024. *These statistics do not include the final week of the year:

Crime Headlines in Savannah in 2024

  • City Market continued to be a problem area in 2024. There was a mass shooting in Ellis Square on May 18, 2024. Eleven people were injured during the shooting. [source][source][source][source]
  • Three juveniles have died in Savannah due to gunfire. The first death occurred on May 18, 2024. The victim was shot while attempting to forcefully enter a residence. The second occurred on July 7, 2024, and the third shooting took place on July 20, 2024. [source][source][source]
  • There were two officer-involved shootings in Savannah in 2024.
  • On July 3, 2024, a Savannah police officer was traveling southbound on Abercorn Street when the officer’s vehicle collided with a pedestrian near the Eisenhower intersection. The pedestrian, Daniel Travis Dorman, died at the scene. [source][source]
  • On December 5, 2024, a Savannah police officer’s vehicle collided with a pedestrian at Waters Avenue and E Waldburg Street. The victim, a juvenile who was wearing dark clothing, was transported to the hospital with possible serious injuries. [source]
  • Former SPD officers Darryl Repress and Ashley Wood were separately arrested and indicted on multiple charges. Wood was charged with 4 counts of perjury and 4 counts of violation of oath of office. Repress was charged with 3 counts of perjury, 2 counts of violation of oath of office, and 1 count of making a false statement. [source][source][source]
  • In August of 2024, Chatham County District Attorney Shalena Cook Jones announced that her office had dismissed charges against 6 people in 3 murder cases in which a total of 5 victims were killed. The cases were dismissed due to police misconduct by former officers Repress and Wood. Cases against the following individuals were unable to be prosecuted: Marquis Parrish, Stanley Hall, John Baker, Jerrell Williams, Rakeem Carlton, and Gilberto Ravelo-Mojica. At least four additional cases were reduced to a lesser charge. [source][source][source]
  • The Savannah Police Department removed the public scanner feed from Broadcastify in early 2024, making it much more difficult for civilians to obtain timely and accurate information regarding shootings and gunfire in the city. [source]
  • Frederic Green, former outreach coordinator for the City of Savannah’s anti-gun violence program, chair of the housing committee, and former co-chair of the city’s re-entry program, was arrested in December of 2024 and charged with the murder of Antwan Small, 49, which took place near Saussy Road in Port Wentworth. Green was appointed to the anti-violence committee and re-entry program by Mayor Van R. Johnson. [source][source]
  • According to the gun violence awareness ribbons posted on the fence at Asbury Memorial Church, we lost 27 Savannahians to gun violence. [source]
